[It is the morning after the tattoo game and the ominous vote distribution. Breakfast of milkshakes and whatever else people brought is set out on a conference table in the sci-fi set. Through the doorways, from the room where these people all sleep, there is a faint smoke from the candle at the shrine for Seven, a counter with a portrait, water, and fruit.

Lotus lifts her eyebrows once everyone is there.]

But what other rumours are you thinking of? We can't get too ballsy with them. We'd even have to make one or two of them true... otherwise it looks like bullshit.

Yes, I know - but the same time, it can't just be the love lives of people here, if there's going to be serious accusations leveled against her.

Hm.

What if we say that the man who's at the bar got killed because he found out something about one of the future rounds? Or something about the stabbing round that's coming up, maybe that they might be planning to give out razor blades instead of knives? Something. Maybe it could be someone had seen the path that one of the people who's tried escaping tried to go down, and just after they disappeared from sight they started screaming, and screamed until it stopped very suddenly.

Too much detail can be as bad as not enough.

You're terrifying, you know that? [ Santa laughs and claps her on the shoulder. ] I knew I loved you for a reason.

[ Okay, but joking aside. ] Are we circulating these rumors by mouth or anonymously in some way? The latter looks better and offers us a gateway if we want to use anon for other things later on.

I- I'm not really sure that's a compliment, Santa! And really, I'm only thinking out loud....

[But she smiles anyway]

Something like an anonymous poster hung up in one of the common areas would be best, I think. In a group this small it would be too easy to trace back to who started them otherwise. You'd probably want to be more sure you had a handle on the situation before you did, though, and it would be best if there were a few rumors that could be proved to be true. It's good if things sound plausible, but having something that's provable adds validity to everything.

We'll have to think of suitably spicy details about people we know that won't ruin them to hear spread.

[A thoughtful pause]

What about something about us? Saying that we had been brought here from another game where we had put our lives on the line?

There's people who know that already, unless you're banking on them being blamed for the rumours mill.

That's what makes it perfect, though. Not only do multiple people know it, but it's kind of scandalous information that can be confirmed from multiple sources. It means that who started these will be harder to trace, and it's something that multiple people will know and can confirm is true.

Then we go with that. What else?

[Raising hand.]

Wait!! What happened to tai chi club? [glancing nervously at Eva and Kyrie and Rosa - none of whom she had told]

You really think that lasted?

Nobody called me out on it yet!

God, why did we make it up in the first place...

June and I told Kyrie what was up. I don't know who else June has told.

I haven't told anyone else anything, and Kyrie did promise not to tell anyone.

All it would be is a rumor - most people don't know it, but enough do that it it would lend validity if we really do want to do this. It's information that we've already been hiding, it's not saying that we aren't from Tai Chi club before that happened, but it does make it seem more dangerous and serious because we have been hiding it, even if I don't think it can really affect any of us.

Besides, why would we be spreading rumors about ourselves?

Actually, yes, why are we spreading rumors about ourselves. Is it just to make it more likely that people believe the sort of false rumor about Ene being somebody nobody should vote for? Isn't that kind of... complicated? A lot of moving parts there. How are people gonna react to the presence of some rumormonger.

That would be the idea, yes. We might not be doing any of this, of course, a lot of it depends on what Ene does going forward.

It's a little complicated if we're just trying to keep anyone from voting for her this round, yes, but if this really is some kind of gambit that she is using to try to sabotage Santa, it's a way to potentially sabotage her without it being easy to directly associate with Santa.

I mean, if we did a majority vote like with the petition, I'd vote no. Too few rumors would get too much scrutiny and too many rumors would have a lot of consequences. I'd have to hear a way more convincing breakdown of what would happen after all these things.

I actually do believe Ene right now. Tentatively. If she valued her own life that much she could beg for a secret second vote from someone. If she valued her grand prize that much... isn't it a little early to draw attention to herself?

Having a rumor mill at our fingertips benefits us in more ways than just this particular situation. It's a subtle way to control the flow of information and get rid of people like that asshole you're so fond of petitioning against without taking such a strong, solid stance.

It could benefit us... but also, nobody has been doing this kind of subtle thing against us so far. We might be setting a precedent for other people to spread rumors that don't benefit us. Of course, people could just decide to talk trash anyway. Still, I think the more it happens, the more likely it is to happen again, so that's something to keep in mind.

Well of course, something like that couldn't remain entirely in our control, even if we did start it. Still, that's why we wouldn't want to do anything until it seemed necessary.

Alright. So, we're on the same page about how it isn't immediately necessary.

There's one more thing on my mind about this... Ene would specifically be trying to discredit Santa, is that what we're worried about? So if the only true rumor is about us, people might start to wonder what the rumormonger was thinking. Then it would be ideal if at least one other big true rumor were there to slow people down from asking, "what does this person think about Santa and company". Make it harder to turn the chessboard around.

She did go around asking for a vote. I think it was meant to be for Mary, but couldn't she use her own for that if she wasn't looking to trade with someone?

I guess what people are supposed to think is "Mary, Ib, and Ene have a combined total of two votes". Still, who would really notice if she didn't ask at all? Even if Ib and Mary asked her one on one if someone was voting for her, she could probably just say "yeah, there's someone".

Exactly my thought. I don't want to assume the worst, but I don't trust it. Frankly I'm more inclined to believe she's trying to pull something but doesn't have the brains to back it up.
